आत्मयॊगसमायुक्तॊ धर्मॊ ऽयं कृतलक्षणः कृते युगे चतुष्पादश चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य शाश्वतः ।। ३-१४८-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'The religion of identifying the self with Brahma defines the Krita Yuga. In that age, the virtues of the four orders were fully realized in their complete measure.' ।। 3-148-21 ।।

english translation

AtmayògasamAyuktò dharmò 'yaM kRtalakSaNaH kRte yuge catuSpAdaza cAturvarNyasya zAzvataH || 3-148-21 ||

एतत कृतयुगं नाम तरैगुण्यपरिवर्जितम तरेताम अपि निबॊध तवं यस्मिन सत्रं परवर्तते ।। ३-१४८-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'Such is the Krita Yuga, devoid of the three qualities. Now, listen as I describe the nature of the Treta Yuga. In this age, sacrifices are introduced, and virtue diminishes by a quarter.' ।। 3-148-22 ।।

english translation

etata kRtayugaM nAma taraiguNyaparivarjitama taretAma api nibòdha tavaM yasmina satraM paravartate || 3-148-22 ||

पादेन हरसते धर्मॊ रक्ततां याति चाच्युतः सत्यप्रवृत्ताश च नराः करिया धर्मपरायणाः ।। ३-१४८-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'Narayana, the Soul of all creatures, assumes a red hue in the Treta Yuga. In this age, people adhere to truth, dedicating themselves to righteousness and religious practices.' ।। 3-148-23 ।।

pAdena harasate dharmò raktatAM yAti cAcyutaH satyapravRttAza ca narAH kariyA dharmaparAyaNAH || 3-148-23 ||

ततॊ यज्ञाः परवर्तन्ते धर्माश च विविधाः करियाः तरेतायां भावसंकल्पाः करिया दानफलॊदयाः ।। ३-१४८-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'It is then that sacrifices and various religious observances come into being. People begin to seek means for attaining their goals, achieving them through acts and offerings, while never deviating from the path of virtue.' ।। 3-148-24 ।।

tatò yajJAH paravartante dharmAza ca vividhAH kariyAH taretAyAM bhAvasaMkalpAH kariyA dAnaphalòdayAH || 3-148-24 ||

परचलन्ति न वै धर्मात तपॊ दानपरायणाः सवधर्मस्थाः करियावन्तॊ जनास तरेतायुगे ऽभवन ।। ३-१४८-२५ ।।

'They are devoted to asceticism and the giving of gifts. The four orders adhere to their respective duties and perform their rituals. Such are the people of the Treta Yuga.' ।। 3-148-25 ।।
