[ल] यः कथ्यते मन्त्रविद अग्र्यबुद्धिर; औद्दालकिः शवेतकेतुः पृथिव्याम तस्याश्रमं पश्य नरेन्द्र पुण्यं; सदा फलैर उपपन्नं मही जैः ॥ ३-१३२-१ ॥

'Lomasa said, "Behold, O lord of men, the sacred hermitage of Śvetaketu, the illustrious son of Uddālaka, whose renown as a master of sacred mantras is celebrated across the earth."' ॥ 3-132-1 ॥

english translation

[la] yaH kathyate mantravida agryabuddhira; auddAlakiH zavetaketuH pRthivyAma tasyAzramaM pazya narendra puNyaM; sadA phalaira upapannaM mahI jaiH ॥ 3-132-1 ॥

साक्षाद अत्र शवेतकेतुर ददर्श; सरॊ वतीं मानुषदेहरूपाम वेत्स्यामि वानीम इति संप्रवृत्तां; सरॊ वतीं शवेतकेतुर बभाषे ॥ ३-१३२-२ ॥

'This revered abode is adorned with graceful coconut trees. Here, Śvetaketu beheld the goddess Sarasvatī in her human form and addressed her, saying .' ॥ 3-132-2 ॥

english translation

sAkSAda atra zavetaketura dadarza; sarò vatIM mAnuSadeharUpAma vetsyAmi vAnIma iti saMpravRttAM; sarò vatIM zavetaketura babhASe ॥ 3-132-2 ॥

तस्मिन काले बरह्म विदां वरिष्ठाव; आस्तां तदा मातुलभागिनेयौ अष्टावक्रश चैव कहॊड सूनुर; औद्दालकिः शवेतकेतुश च राजन ॥ ३-१३२-३ ॥

'May I be blessed with the gift of eloquence!" During that era, Śvetaketu, the son of Uddālaka, and Aṣṭāvakra, the son of Kahoda, stood as the foremost among those proficient in sacred knowledge.' ॥ 3-132-3 ॥

tasmina kAle barahma vidAM variSThAva; AstAM tadA mAtulabhAgineyau aSTAvakraza caiva kahòDa sUnura; auddAlakiH zavetaketuza ca rAjana ॥ 3-132-3 ॥

विदेहराजस्य महीपतेस तौ; विप्राव उभौ मातुलभागिनेयौ परविश्य यज्ञायतनं विवादे; बन्दिं निजग्राहतुर अप्रमेयम ॥ ३-१३२-४ ॥

'These two Brahmanas, unparalleled in brilliance and bound by the bond of uncle and nephew, entered the sacrificial assembly of King Janaka. There, they triumphed over Vandin in a debate of profound wisdom and intellect.' ॥ 3-132-4 ॥

videharAjasya mahIpatesa tau; viprAva ubhau mAtulabhAgineyau paravizya yajJAyatanaM vivAde; bandiM nijagrAhatura aprameyama ॥ 3-132-4 ॥

[य] कथं परभावः स बभूव विप्रस; तथायुक्तं यॊ निजग्राह बन्दिम अष्टावक्रः केन चासौ बभूव; तत सर्वं मे लॊमश शंस तत्त्वम ॥ ३-१३२-५ ॥

'Yudhishthira then asked, "O Lomasa, tell me in detail about the extraordinary power of this man who triumphed over Vandin in such a manner. And why was he born as Aṣṭāvakra, with his body bent in eight places?"' ॥ 3-132-5 ॥

[ya] kathaM parabhAvaH sa babhUva viprasa; tathAyuktaM yò nijagrAha bandima aSTAvakraH kena cAsau babhUva; tata sarvaM me lòmaza zaMsa tattvama ॥ 3-132-5 ॥
