[षयेन] धर्मात्मानं तव आहुर एकं सर्वे राजन महीक्षितः स वै धर्मविरुद्धं तवं कस्मात कर्म चिकीर्षसि ॥ ३-१३१-१ ॥
'The hawk said, "All the kings of the earth regard you as a righteous ruler. Why, then, O prince, have you paused to commit an act that is contrary to the (Dharma) righteous law?"' ॥ 3-131-1 ॥
english translation
विहितं भक्षणं राजन पीड्यमानस्य मे कषुधा मा भाङ्क्षीर धर्मलॊभेन धर्मम उत्सृष्टवान असि ॥ ३-१३१-२ ॥
'I have been sorely afflicted with hunger. Do not, thinking you are upholding virtue, withhold from me that which has been ordained by the Deity as my food. For in doing so, you would not be serving righteousness, but forsaking it.' ॥ 3-131-2 ॥
english translation
[राजन] संत्रस्तरूपस तराणार्थी तवत्तॊ भीतॊ महाद्विज मत्सकाशम अनुप्राप्तः पराणगृध्नुर अयं दविजः ॥ ३-१३१-३ ॥
'Thereupon, the king said, "O best of the feathered race, this bird, trembling with fear of you and eager to escape your grasp, has hastened to me, seeking its life."' ॥ 3-131-3 ॥
english translation
एवम अभ्यागतस्येह कपॊतस्याभयार्थिनः अप्रदाने परॊ ऽधर्मः किं तवं शयेनप्रपश्यसि ॥ ३-१३१-४ ॥
'When this pigeon has sought my protection in such a manner, why do you not see that the highest virtue lies in my not surrendering it to you?' ॥ 3-131-4 ॥
english translation
परस्पन्दमानः संभ्रान्तः कपॊतः शयेनलक्ष्यते मत्सकाशं जीवितार्थी तस्य तयागॊ विगर्हितः ॥ ३-१३१-५ ॥
'It trembles with fear, is in distress, and seeks its life from me. Therefore, to abandon it would undoubtedly be a sinful act.' ॥ 3-131-5 ॥
