[र] ममापराधात तैः कषुद्रैर हतस तवं तात बालिशैः कार्तवीर्यस्य दाया दैर वने मृग इवेषुभिः ॥ ३-११७-१ ॥
'Rama said, 'O father, the blame rests with me, for like a deer in the forest, you have been struck down by those mean and foolish sons of Kartavirya.'' ॥ 3-117-1 ॥
english translation
[ra] mamAparAdhAta taiH kaSudraira hatasa tavaM tAta bAlizaiH kArtavIryasya dAyA daira vane mRga iveSubhiH ॥ 3-117-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधर्मज्ञस्य कथं तात वर्तमानस्य सत्पथे मृत्युर एवंविधॊ युक्तः सर्वभूतेष्व अनागसः ॥ ३-११७-२ ॥
'And how could it be, O father, that a virtuous soul like yours—unyielding in righteousness and harmless to all living beings—was allowed by Fate to meet such a tragic end?' ॥ 3-117-2 ॥
english translation
dharmajJasya kathaM tAta vartamAnasya satpathe mRtyura evaMvidhò yuktaH sarvabhUteSva anAgasaH ॥ 3-117-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकिं नु तैर न कृतं पापं यैर भवांस तपसि सथितः अयुध्यमानॊ वृद्धः सन हतः शरशतैः शितैः ॥ ३-११७-३ ॥
'What a terrible sin must they have committed, striking you down with hundreds of sharpened arrows, while you were an aged sage engaged in penance and entirely averse to combat!' ॥ 3-117-3 ॥
english translation
kiM nu taira na kRtaM pApaM yaira bhavAMsa tapasi sathitaH ayudhyamAnò vRddhaH sana hataH zarazataiH zitaiH ॥ 3-117-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकिं नु ते तत्र वक्ष्यन्ति सचिवेषु सुहृत्सु च अयुध्यमानं धर्मज्ञम एकं हत्वानपत्रपाः ॥ ३-११७-४ ॥
'How will those shameless wretches ever show their faces to friends and servants, boasting of the fact that they have slain a defenseless and virtuous man?' ॥ 3-117-4 ॥

kiM nu te tatra vakSyanti saciveSu suhRtsu ca ayudhyamAnaM dharmajJama ekaM hatvAnapatrapAH ॥ 3-117-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[अक] विलप्यैवं स करुणं बहु नानाविधं नृप परेतकार्याणि सर्वाणि पितुश चक्रे महातपाः ॥ ३-११७-५ ॥
'O protector of men, in this manner, the great ascetic mourned deeply and piteously for his father before performing the final rites.' ॥ 3-117-5 ॥
