अवाप्य कृच्छ्रं विहितं ह्यरण्ये दीर्घं कालं चैकमज्ञातचर्याम् । ते ह्यकस्माज्जीवितं पाण्डवानां न मृष्यन्ते धार्तराष्ट्राः पदस्थाः॥५-४७-८६॥
Having undergone the hardship ordained in the forest, and then one further year of concealed living over the long course of time, the Dhārtarāṣṭras, established in power, cannot endure that the Pāṇḍavas still survive.

ते चेदस्मान्युध्यमानाञ्जयेयुर्देवैरपीन्द्रप्रमुखैः सहायैः । धर्मादधर्मश्चरितो गरीयानिति ध्रुवं नास्ति कृतं न साधु॥५-४७-८७॥
Even if, in the midst of battle, they were to defeat us with the aid of the gods led by Indra, it would still not be certain that conduct opposed to Dharma is greater than Dharma; such a victory would not make the deed righteous.

न चेदिमं पुरुषं कर्मबद्धं न चेदस्मान्मन्यतेऽसौ विशिष्टान् । आशंसेऽहं वासुदेवद्वितीयो दुर्योधनं सानुबन्धं निहन्तुम्॥५-४७-८८॥
If this man is not bound by karma, and if he does not deem us superior, then I expect that—with Vāsudeva as my second—I shall be able to bring down Duryodhana together with all his adherents.

न चेदिदं कर्म नरेषु बद्धं न विद्यते पुरुषस्य स्वकर्म । इदं च तच्चापि समीक्ष्य नूनं पराजयो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य साधुः॥५-४७-८९॥
If this karma is not fixed among human beings, and if a person’s own action is not operative, then—considering both possibilities—indeed the defeat of the Dhartarashtra side would be appropriate.

प्रत्यक्षं वः कुरवो यद्ब्रवीमि युध्यमाना धार्तराष्ट्रा न सन्ति । अन्यत्र युद्धात्कुरवः परीप्सन्न युध्यतां शेष इहास्ति कश्चित्॥५-४७-९०॥
Kurus, what I say to you is evident: when engaged in battle, the Dhartarashtras will not remain. Apart from war, Kurus, seeking preservation, there is no one left here who should refrain from fighting.
