Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sanatsujāta, if you are to expound this Brahmic speech—universal in form and oriented to the highest end—then tell me that teaching, O youth; for such a supreme discourse is exceedingly difficult to obtain amid worldly desires.

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: This Brahman is not attained by one who is in haste, though you question me with intense eagerness. I shall expound the ancient, unmanifest knowledge, realized by the intellect (buddhi) and perfected through disciplined brahmacarya.

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: You speak of an eternal “unmanifest knowledge,” perfected through brahmacarya. Without undertaking the prescribed discipline—especially at a time when one should be living in regulated studentship—how could one attain the brahminical state and immortality?

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: Those who, in this world, overcome desire and patiently abide in the brahminical state—steadfast in clarity—draw forth the self from the body here, as one draws a reed from muñja-grass.

english translation

O Bhārata, father and mother produce this body. But the birth that comes from the teacher as instructor is the true birth—unaging and undying.
