Vigilance, non-negligence (apramāda), is said to counter the eight faults; therefore one should avoid those faults. They arise from the five senses and from the mind, O Bhārata. Freed from fixation on the past and the future, one becomes steady and content.

english translation

Freed from these faults and endowed with these virtues, this alone becomes austerity—tapas—even when accompanied by prosperity. Since you ask me, O best of kings, what more do you wish to hear?

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: People are commonly spoken of as “knowers of the Vedas, with narrative as the fifth.” Likewise, some are called knowers of four Vedas, and others again, knowers of three.

english translation

There are those called knowers of two Vedas, of one Veda, and others who are without ṛc-hymns. Among them, which one is the Brāhmaṇa whom I should recognize as truly knowing?

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: Because the one Veda is not understood, the Vedas have become many. The single reality is truth, O king; only one established in truth truly stands. Thus, without diminishing the Veda, they cultivate profound wisdom.
