Anger, grief, thirsting desire, greed, malicious tale-bearing, envy, contentiousness, inner distress, and compulsive attachment—(these too are among the faults to be countered).

english translation

Mental confusion, excessive talk, and self-conceit—whoever is free from these faults is what the virtuous call ‘self-restraint’ (dama).

english translation

But superior is renunciation (tyāga) of six kinds: on obtaining what is pleasant, one does not become elated; and when what is unpleasant arises, one does not ever fall into agitation.

english translation

Even one’s cherished spouse and children should not be taken as the sole authority over one’s speech. What ought to be given should be given to a worthy petitioner; that is the proper rule of conduct. Even if it requires uttering what is ordinarily unspeakable, this is remembered as the third virtue.

english translation

One who holds wealth that has been renounced or set aside does not indulge in it out of desire, nor is he deficient in his duties—like a person whose understanding is disciplined as a student’s. Even if wealthy, such a one is endowed with all virtues.
