One who is inflamed by rivalry in matters of enjoyment, who regrets what he has given, who is miserly and weak, who flatters his own faction, and who is hostile toward women—these are seven further patterns of cruel, unscrupulous conduct.
english translation
Dharma, truthfulness, self-restraint, disciplined practice (tapas), freedom from envy, moral modesty, forbearance, absence of fault-finding, sacrificial duty (yajña), generosity, steadiness, and learning—these twelve are the great vows of a brāhmaṇa.
english translation
But one who departs from these twelve, even if he were to rule this entire earth, should be known as having no true self-possession—no inner moral title. Though he excel in three, in two, or even in one capacity, that alone does not establish inner legitimacy.
english translation
Self-restraint, renunciation, and vigilant heedfulness—within these, it is said, the ‘deathless’ good is enshrined. The wise brāhmaṇas declare that these virtues have truth at their forefront.
english translation
Self-restraint (dama) is said to stand opposed to eighteen faults, in what is done and what is left undone: untruth, malice, desire and acquisitiveness, and craving—among them.
