Giving, study, and sacrifice may be set in motion by greed. For those who fall away from truth, their intention becomes hollow, ineffective, and unreliable.
english translation
Then sacrifice is properly extended only through firm commitment to truth. When one thing is held in mind, another is spoken, and yet another is done in action, the person fails. But one perfected in intention stands firmly upon their resolves.
english translation
For this, one should undertake the vow of initiation (dīkṣā) without dependence on servants or external supports. This is not merely a name derived from verbal roots; truth (satya) alone is the highest for the good. Knowledge is what is directly evident; austerity (tapas) gives rise to indirect, mediated knowledge.
english translation
One who studies much may be called “much-read”; therefore, O Kṣatriya, do not deem a man a brāhmaṇa merely by his speech. He who does not depart from truth—him you should recognize as a brāhmaṇa.
english translation
The Vedic metres (chandas), O Kṣatriya—Atharvan proclaimed them of old; they are a creation of the seers. Yet those who are merely knowers of metres, even after studying them, do not thereby know the truly knowable, nor do they grasp the real purport of what is to be known through the Veda.
