One should be neither abusive nor contemptuous; one should not betray another’s friendship, nor cleave to base conduct. One should be neither arrogant nor of degraded behavior; one should avoid harsh and wounding speech.

english translation

Terrible words in this world scorch a person’s vital points, bones, heart, and even the life-breath. Therefore, one who delights in dharma should always avoid speech that wounds and is harsh in form.

english translation

One should know as most inauspicious among men the one whose speech is harsh and rough, who pierces others with thorn-like words—as though bearing Nirṛti, misfortune itself, fastened upon his mouth.

english translation

Even if another were to strike him hard with exceedingly sharp arrows, blazing like fire and sun, the wise—though diminished—would understand: “This is a deposit of merit (puṇya) accruing to me through endurance.”

english translation

Whether one keeps company with the virtuous or the unvirtuous, with an austere ascetic or even with a thief—just as cloth takes on the dye’s hue, so a person comes under the influence of those companions.
