He seeks the well-being of all and does not set his mind on others’ non-being. Truthful in speech, gentle, and self-controlled—such a person is the highest type of person.

english translation

He does not offer empty consolation; having promised, he gives. He understands what is accomplished and what is not—such a person is the middle type of person.

english translation

Duḥśāsana is an aggressor, not a disciplinarian; ruled by anger and ungrateful, he does not turn back. He is malevolent and a friend to no one—these are the marks of a base man in this world.

english translation

Suspicious even of others’ goodwill, he does not trust beneficial intentions; he rejects his friends—such a person is indeed a base man.

english translation

One should associate with the excellent, and when appropriate, with the middling; but one who seeks his own welfare should not associate with the base.
