A person may obtain wealth through improper power, or through constant effort, intelligence, and initiative; yet by that he does not gain proper esteem, nor does he attain the cultivated conduct associated with great lineages.

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Even the gods, and those advanced in dharma and artha, and the learned, aspire to great lineages. I ask you, Vidura, this question: what, indeed, are the great lineages?

english translation

Vidura said: Austerity, self-restraint, knowledge of Brahman, the proper establishment of rites, meritorious marriages, and continual giving of food—where these seven qualities are found, together with right conduct, those are great lineages.

english translation

Those whose conduct does not falter, nor their lineage fall into distress; who practice dharma through the clarity of good conduct; who seek distinguished renown for their family and have abandoned falsehood—those are great lineages.

english translation

Through marriages not ritually proper, through neglect or undermining of the Veda, and through transgressing dharma, families fall into the condition of “non-lineage,” losing their noble standing.
