When the Kurus followed the judgment of the Kṣattṛ (Vidura), adversity did not approach them. For as long as they adhered to his practical wisdom, their kingdom continued to prosper.

Understand from me today, O Sūta, who the advisers of that Dhārtarāṣṭra, greedy for advantage, are: Duḥśāsana, Śakuni, and the sūta’s son. O Gāvalgaṇa, behold his delusion.
english translation

english translation
Dhṛtarāṣṭra together with his sons hopes for an unrivaled great sovereignty on earth. In such a posture, restraint is not found at all; he considers the desired advantage to be already within his grasp.
english translation
As for what Karṇa considers “surmountable”—namely Arjuna in battle, weapons in hand—there were great conflicts in earlier times as well; how is it that Karṇa did not become an “island,” a protective refuge, in those crises?
