दर्भचीरं निवस्याथ दण्डाजिन विभूषितः पूर्णे पूर्णे तरिरात्रे तु मासम एकं फलाशनः दविगुणेनैव कालेन दवितीयं मासम अत्यगात ॥ ३-३९-२१ ॥
'Clad in grass garments and equipped with a black deerskin and a staff, he subsisted on withered leaves fallen on the ground. During the first month, he consumed fruits at intervals of three nights, and in the second month, he extended the interval to six nights.' ॥ 3-39-21 ॥

darbhacIraM nivasyAtha daNDAjina vibhUSitaH pUrNe pUrNe tarirAtre tu mAsama ekaM phalAzanaH daviguNenaiva kAlena davitIyaM mAsama atyagAta ॥ 3-39-21 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतृतीयम अपि मासं स पक्षेणाहारम आचरन शीर्णं च पतितं भूमौ पर्णं समुपयुक्तवान ॥ ३-३९-२२ ॥
'In the third month, he followed the same regimen, eating only the withered leaves that had fallen on the ground.' ॥ 3-39-22 ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptचतुर्थे तव अथ संप्राप्ते मासि पूर्णे ततः परम वायुभक्षॊ महाबाहुर अभवत पाण्डुनन्दनः ऊर्ध्वबाहुर निरालम्बः पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रविष्ठितः ॥ ३-३९-२३ ॥
'In the third month, he ate only at intervals of a fortnight. When the fourth month arrived, the illustrious son of Pandu, the mighty-armed one, subsisted solely on air. With his arms raised, unsupported, and standing on the tips of his toes, he continued his rigorous austerities.' ॥ 3-39-23 ॥

'And, as a result of his frequent bathing, the illustrious hero's locks assumed the hue of lightning or the lotus.' ॥ 3-39-24 ॥

'Seeing this, all the great Rishis gathered together and went to the god of the Pinaka to report the intense asceticism of the son of Pritha. And bowing to the god of gods, they reported to him:' ॥ 3-39-25 ॥

tatò maharSayaH sarve jagmura devaM pinAkinama zitikaNThaM mahAbhAgaM paraNipatya parasAdya ca sarve nivedayAma AsuH karma tata phalgunasya ha ॥ 3-39-25 ॥
