ततॊ ऽपश्यत सव्यसाची वृक्षमूले तपस्विनम बराह्म्या शरिया दीप्यमानं पिङ्गलं जटिलं कृशम ।। ३-३८-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'Hearing the voice, the son of Pandu cast his eyes about, and soon beheld an ascetic under the shade of a tree. The sage, resplendent with Brahmanic brilliance, was tawny-hued, emaciated, and adorned with matted locks.' ।। 3-38-31 ।।

english translation

tatò 'pazyata savyasAcI vRkSamUle tapasvinama barAhmyA zariyA dIpyamAnaM piGgalaM jaTilaM kRzama || 3-38-31 ||

'And the mighty ascetic, observing Arjuna stop at that place, addressed him, saying, "Who art thou, O child, arriving here with bow and arrows, clad in mail and bearing a scabbard and gauntlets, and evidently devoted to the customs of the Kshatriya?' ।। 3-38-32 ।।

sò 'baravIda arjunaM tatra sathitaM dRSTvA mahAtapAH kasa tavaM tAteha saMprAptò dhanuSmAna kavacI zarI nibaddhAsi talatrANaH kaSatradharmama anuvrataH || 3-38-32 ||

'Here, there is no need for weapons. This is the abode of peaceful Brahmanas, devoted to ascetic austerities, without anger or joy.' ।। 3-38-33 ।।

neha zastreNa kartavyaM zAntAnAma ayama AlayaH vinItakròdhaharSANAM barAhmaNAnAM tapasvinAma || 3-38-33 ||

'There is no need for the bow here, for this place is free from conflict. Therefore, lay aside your bow, O child. By arriving here, you have attained a state of purity and spiritual elevation. ' ।। 3-38-34 ।।

'Thus, to the hero of infinite energy, as if to any other ordinary person, Speaking repeatedly, the Brahmin addressed Arjuna: But he could not shake him from his firmness and strong resolve.' ।। 3-38-35 ।।

itya anantaujasaM vIraM yathA cAnyaM pRthagjanama tathA vAcanma athAbhIkSNaM barAhmaNò 'rajunama abravIta na cainaM cAlayAma Asa dhairyAta sudRDha nizcayama || 3-38-35 ||
