यस्य कार्यम अकार्यं वा समम एव भवत्य उत कस तस्य विश्वसेद वीरॊ दुर्मतेर अकृतात्मनः ॥ ३-२९७-६ ॥
'What man of wisdom would place trust in one so wicked and driven by base desires—one to whom right and wrong are the same?' ॥ 3-297-6 ॥
english translation
yasya kAryama akAryaM vA samama eva bhavatya uta kasa tasya vizvaseda vIrò durmatera akRtAtmanaH ॥ 3-297-6 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ वा पुरुषैर गूढैः परयॊगॊ ऽयं दुरात्मनः भवेद इति महाबाहुर बहुधा समचिन्तयत ॥ ३-२९७-७ ॥
'Or perhaps," he thought, "this is the work of that wicked-souled one, carried out through his secret agents." And thus did that highly intelligent, mighty-armed son of Dharma give way to many such reflections, turning over every possibility in his mind.' ॥ 3-297-7 ॥
english translation
atha vA puruSaira gUDhaiH parayògò 'yaM durAtmanaH bhaveda iti mahAbAhura bahudhA samacintayata ॥ 3-297-7 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्यासीन न विषेणेदम उदकं दूषितं यथा मुखवर्णाः परसन्ना मे भरातॄणाम इत्य अचिन्तयत ॥ ३-२९७-८ ॥
'He did not believe that the water had been poisoned, for though they lay dead, their faces bore no corpse-like pallor. "The color on the faces of my brothers has not faded!" he thought. "Their features remain calm and radiant—even in death."' ॥ 3-297-8 ॥
english translation
tasyAsIna na viSeNedama udakaM dUSitaM yathA mukhavarNAH parasannA me bharAtRRNAma itya acintayata ॥ 3-297-8 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएकैकशश चौघबलान इमान पुरुषसत्तमान कॊ ऽनयः परतिसमासेत कालान्तकयमाद ऋते ॥ ३-२९७-९ ॥
'And thus did Yudhishthira reflect. Then the king said to himself: "Each of these foremost of men was like a mighty torrent—unstoppable and fierce. Who, then, could have overcome them, if not Yama himself—he who, in time, brings the end of all things?"' ॥ 3-297-9 ॥

ekaikazaza caughabalAna imAna puruSasattamAna kò 'nayaH paratisamAseta kAlAntakayamAda Rte ॥ 3-297-9 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएतेनाध्यवसायेन तत तॊयम अवगाढवान गाहमानश च तत तॊयम अन्तरिक्षात स शुश्रुवे ॥ ३-२९७-१० ॥
'And having firmly arrived at this conclusion, Yudhishthira stepped forward to bathe in the lake. But as he began to descend into the water, he heard a voice from the sky declare—' ॥ 3-297-10 ॥
