[बरा] यदि नेच्छसि भद्रे तवं वरं मत्तः शुचिस्मिते इमं मन्त्रं गृहाण तवम आह्वानाय दिवौकसाम ॥ ३-२८९-१६ ॥

sanskrit

'The Brahmana then said, ‘O gentle maiden, if thou dost not wish to receive boons from me, O sweet-smiling one, then take this mantra from me to invoke the celestial beings.’' ॥ 3-289-16 ॥

english translation

[barA] yadi necchasi bhadre tavaM varaM mattaH zucismite imaM mantraM gRhANa tavama AhvAnAya divaukasAma ॥ 3-289-16 ॥

'Any one among the celestials whom thou dost invoke by uttering this mantra shall appear before thee and be under thy command.' ॥ 3-289-17 ॥

'Whether willing or not, by virtue of this sacred chant, that deity—gentle in guise and obedient as a servant—will become subject to thy power.' ॥ 3-289-18 ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, ‘Thus addressed, that faultless maiden could not, O King, for the second time and out of fear of the curse, refuse to comply with the wishes of that foremost of the twice-born.’' ॥ 3-289-19 ॥
