[जनम] किं तद गुह्यं न चाख्यातं कर्णायेहॊष्ण रश्मिना कीदृशे कुण्डले ते च कवचं चैव कीदृशम ।। ३-२८७-१ ।।

Janamejaya said: "What was that secret which the deity of warm rays did not reveal to Karna? And of what kind were those earrings, and what was the nature of that coat of mail he possessed?" ।। 3-287-1 ।।

[janama] kiM tada guhyaM na cAkhyAtaM karNAyehòSNa razminA kIdRze kuNDale te ca kavacaM caiva kIdRzama || 3-287-1 ||

कुतश च कवचं तस्य कुण्डले चैव सत्तम एतद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुं तन मे बरूहि तपॊधन ।। ३-२८७-२ ।।

'Whence came that coat of mail and those earrings, O best of men? All this I long to hear. Do tell me everything, O thou who art rich in the wealth of asceticism!' ।। 3-287-2 ।।

[वषम्पायन] अयं राजन बरवीम्य एतद यत तद गुह्यं विभावसॊः यादृशे कुण्डले चैव कवचं चैव यादृशम ।। ३-२८७-३ ।।

'Vaiśampāyana said: "O king, I shall now reveal to you the secret which was not disclosed by the radiant deity, lord of blazing effulgence. I shall also describe to you the nature of those earrings and that divine coat of mail."' ।। 3-287-3 ।।

[vaSampAyana] ayaM rAjana baravImya etada yata tada guhyaM vibhAvasòH yAdRze kuNDale caiva kavacaM caiva yAdRzama || 3-287-3 ||

कुन्तिभॊजं पुरा राजन बराह्मणः समुपस्थितः तिग्मतेजा महाप्रांशुः शमश्रुदण्डजटा धरः ।। ३-२८७-४ ।।

'Once upon a time, O king, there appeared before Kuntibhoja a Brāhmaṇa of fierce energy and lofty stature, his form adorned with a beard and matted locks, and a staff held firmly in his hand.' ।। 3-287-4 ।।

kuntibhòjaM purA rAjana barAhmaNaH samupasthitaH tigmatejA mahAprAMzuH zamazrudaNDajaTA dharaH || 3-287-4 ||

दर्शनीयॊ ऽनवद्याङ्गस तेजसा परज्वलन्न इव मधु पिङ्गॊ मधुरवाक तपः सव्याध्याय भूषणः ।। ३-२८७-५ ।।

'He was pleasing to the eye, with flawless limbs, and seemed to shine with a blazing inner splendour. His complexion was of a honey-golden hue, tinged with blue. His voice was soft and mellifluous, and he was adorned with the merit of austerities and the deep knowledge of the Vedas.' ।। 3-287-5 ।।
