वृणॊमि कीर्तिं लॊके हि जीवितेनापि भानुमन कीर्तिमान अश्नुते सवर्गं हीनकीर्तिस तु नश्यति ॥ ३-२८४-३१ ॥

'O lord of light, I crave but fame, though life itself may be the price— For they who win renown attain the skies, while the nameless fade into dust.' ॥ 3-284-31 ॥

english translation

vRNòmi kIrtiM lòke hi jIvitenApi bhAnumana kIrtimAna aznute savargaM hInakIrtisa tu nazyati ॥ 3-284-31 ॥

कीर्तिर हि पुरुषं लॊके संजीवयति मातृवत अकीर्तिर जीवितं हन्ति जीवतॊ ऽपि शरीरिणः ॥ ३-२८४-३२ ॥

'Fame preserves a man in this world, even as a mother gives him life, while infamy slays him, though he still walks the earth with body unharmed.' ॥ 3-284-32 ॥

english translation

kIrtira hi puruSaM lòke saMjIvayati mAtRvata akIrtira jIvitaM hanti jIvatò 'pi zarIriNaH ॥ 3-284-32 ॥

अयं पुराणः शलॊकॊ हि सवयं गीतॊ विभावसॊ धात्रा लॊकेश्वर यथा कीर्तिर आयुर नरस्य वै ॥ ३-२८४-३३ ॥

'O lord of the worlds, O radiant one, that fame is the true life of men is declared in an ancient verse once sung by the Creator himself: In the next world, it is fame that upholds a man; and in this world, pure and unsullied fame alone makes life truly enduring.' ॥ 3-284-33 ॥

english translation

ayaM purANaH zalòkò hi savayaM gItò vibhAvasò dhAtrA lòkezvara yathA kIrtira Ayura narasya vai ॥ 3-284-33 ॥

पुरुषस्य परे लॊके कीर्तिर एव परायणम इह लॊके विशुद्धा च कीर्तिर आयुर विवर्धनी ॥ ३-२८४-३४ ॥

'In the next world, fame alone is the true refuge of a man; and in this world, pure and unsullied fame enhances the span of life.' ॥ 3-284-34 ॥

puruSasya pare lòke kIrtira eva parAyaNama iha lòke vizuddhA ca kIrtira Ayura vivardhanI ॥ 3-284-34 ॥

सॊ ऽहं शरीरजे दत्त्वा कीर्तिं पराप्स्यामि शाश्वतीम दत्त्वा च विधिवद दानं बराह्मणेभ्यॊ यथाविधि ॥ ३-२८४-३५ ॥

'Thus shall I win eternal fame, by giving from my very flesh— A gift bestowed with sacred rites, as to the Brahmanas rightly due.' ॥ 3-284-35 ॥

sò 'haM zarIraje dattvA kIrtiM parApsyAmi zAzvatIma dattvA ca vidhivada dAnaM barAhmaNebhyò yathAvidhi ॥ 3-284-35 ॥
