[मार्क] ततॊ विनिर्याय पुरात कुम्भकर्णः सहानुगः अपश्यत कपिसैन्यं तज जितकाश्य अग्रतः सथितम ॥ ३-२७१-१ ॥
'Markandeya said, 'Then Kumbhakarna, accompanied by his followers, set out from the city. Soon, he beheld the victorious monkey troops encamped before him.'' ॥ 3-271-1 ॥
english translation
तम अभ्येत्याशु हरयः परिवार्य समन्ततः अभ्यघ्नंश च महाकायैर बहुभिर जगती रुहैः करजैर अतुदंश चान्ये विहाय भयम उत्तमम ॥ ३-२७१-२ ॥
'The monkeys quickly approached him, surrounding him from all sides. They struck him with many great tree trunks, and others, abandoning their great fear, wounded him with their claws.' ॥ 3-271-2 ॥

बहुधा युध्यमानास ते युद्धमार्गैः पलवंगमाः नानाप्रहरणैर भीमं राक्षसेन्द्रम अताडयन ॥ ३-२७१-३ ॥
'And the monkeys began to fight with him in various ways, all in accordance with the rules of warfare.' ॥ 3-271-3 ॥

स ताड्यमानः परहसन भक्षयाम आस वानरान पनसं च गवाक्षं च वज्रबाहुं च वानरम ॥ ३-२७१-४ ॥
'And they soon overwhelmed the chief of the Rakshasas with a shower of terrible and varied weapons. Despite this, Kumbhakarna merely laughed at them and began to devour the monkeys. He consumed the foremost of them, known by the names Chala, Chandachala, and Vajravahu.' ॥ 3-271-4 ॥

तद दृष्ट्वा वयथनं कर्म कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः उदक्रॊशन परित्रस्तास तारप्रभृतयस तदा ॥ ३-२७१-५ ॥
'And witnessing the terrifying actions of the Rakshasa, the other monkeys, struck with fear, let out a loud cry.' ॥ 3-271-5 ॥
