कुम्भकर्णॊ बलेनासीत सर्वेभ्यॊ ऽभयधिकस तदा मायावी रणशौण्डश च रौद्रश च रजनीचरः ॥ ३-२५९-११ ॥

'And the Rākṣasa Kumbhakarṇa was the mightiest of them all in battle, fierce and formidable, and a master of the arts of illusion.' ॥ 3-259-11 ॥

english translation

kumbhakarNò balenAsIta sarvebhyò 'bhayadhikasa tadA mAyAvI raNazauNDaza ca raudraza ca rajanIcaraH ॥ 3-259-11 ॥

खरॊ धनुषि विक्रान्तॊ बरह्म दविट पिशिताशनः सिद्धविघ्नकरी चापि रौद्रा शूर्पणखा तथा ॥ ३-२५९-१२ ॥

'And Khara was skilled in archery, hostile to the Brahmins, and lived on flesh. The fierce Śūrpaṇakhā was a constant source of trouble to the ascetics.' ॥ 3-259-12 ॥

kharò dhanuSi vikrAntò barahma daviTa pizitAzanaH siddhavighnakarI cApi raudrA zUrpaNakhA tathA ॥ 3-259-12 ॥

सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वे सुचरितव्रताः ऊषुः पित्रा सह रता गन्धमादन पर्वते ॥ ३-२५९-१३ ॥

'And those warriors, well-versed in the Vedas and steadfast in their vows, resided with their father on Mount Gandhamādana.' ॥ 3-259-13 ॥

ततॊ वैश्रवणं तत्र ददृशुर नरवाहनम पित्रा सार्धं समासीनम ऋद्ध्या परमया युतम ॥ ३-२५९-१४ ॥

'There they beheld Vaiśravaṇa, seated with their father, resplendent in wealth and borne upon the shoulders of men.' ॥ 3-259-14 ॥

'Seized with jealousy, they resolved to undertake austerities. Through the most severe penances, they sought to gratify Brahmā.' ॥ 3-259-15 ॥
