[य] भगवन दानधर्माणं तपसॊ वा महामुने किं सविद बहुगुणं परेत्य किं वा दुष्करम उच्यते ॥ ३-२४५-२६ ॥

'Yudhishthira said: "O most virtuous one, O great sage, between charity and asceticism, which bears greater fruit in the next world? And which is more difficult to practice?"' ॥ 3-245-26 ॥

[ya] bhagavana dAnadharmANaM tapasò vA mahAmune kiM savida bahuguNaM paretya kiM vA duSkarama ucyate ॥ 3-245-26 ॥

[वयास] दानान न दुष्करतरं पृथिव्याम अस्ति किं चन अर्थे हि महती तृष्णा स च दुःखेन लभ्यते ॥ ३-२४५-२७ ॥

'Vyasa said: "O child, there is nothing more difficult to practice in this world than charity. Men have an intense longing for wealth, and acquiring it is fraught with hardship."' ॥ 3-245-27 ॥

[vayAsa] dAnAna na duSkarataraM pRthivyAma asti kiM cana arthe hi mahatI tRSNA sa ca duHkhena labhyate ॥ 3-245-27 ॥

परित्यज्य रियान पराकान धर्मार्थं हि महाहवम परविशन्ति नरा वीराः समुद्रम अटवीं तथा ॥ ३-२४५-२८ ॥

'Indeed, even at the cost of their own lives, heroic men venture into the depths of the sea and the wilderness in pursuit of riches.' ॥ 3-245-28 ॥

parityajya riyAna parAkAna dharmArthaM hi mahAhavama paravizanti narA vIrAH samudrama aTavIM tathA ॥ 3-245-28 ॥

कृषिगॊरक्ष्यम इत्य एके परतिपद्यन्ति मानवाः पुरुषाः परेष्यताम एके निर्गच्छन्ति धनार्थिनः ॥ ३-२४५-२९ ॥

'For the sake of wealth, some engage in agriculture and cattle-rearing, while others submit to servitude.' ॥ 3-245-29 ॥

kRSigòrakSyama itya eke paratipadyanti mAnavAH puruSAH pareSyatAma eke nirgacchanti dhanArthinaH ॥ 3-245-29 ॥

तस्य दुःखार्जितस्यैवं परित्यागः सुदुष्करः न दुष्करतरं दानात तस्माद दानं मतं मम ॥ ३-२४५-३० ॥

'Therefore, parting with wealth, which is gained through such toil, is exceedingly difficult. Since nothing is harder to practice than charity, I believe that the act of giving surpasses all other virtues.' ॥ 3-245-30 ॥

tasya duHkhArjitasyaivaM parityAgaH suduSkaraH na duSkarataraM dAnAta tasmAda dAnaM mataM mama ॥ 3-245-30 ॥
