[मार्क] एवं तु सूक्ष्मे कथिते धर्मव्याजेन भारत बराह्मणः स पुनः सूक्ष्मं पप्रच्छ सुसमाहितः ।। ३-२०३-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Markandeya continued, "O Bharata, after the fowler had explained these profound principles, the Brahmana, with deep focus and keen attention, further inquired about these subtle topics."' ।। 3-203-1 ।।

english translation

[mArka] evaM tu sUkSme kathite dharmavyAjena bhArata barAhmaNaH sa punaH sUkSmaM papraccha susamAhitaH || 3-203-1 ||

hk transliteration

[बरा] सत्त्वस्य रजसश चैव तमसश च यथातथम गुणांस तत्त्वेन मे बरूहि यथावद इह पृच्छतः ।। ३-२०३-२ ।।

sanskrit

'The Brahmana said, "Kindly explain to me in detail, as I earnestly seek your guidance, the distinct characteristics and virtues of the qualities of sattva, rajas, and tamas."' ।। 3-203-2 ।।

english translation

[barA] sattvasya rajasaza caiva tamasaza ca yathAtathama guNAMsa tattvena me barUhi yathAvada iha pRcchataH || 3-203-2 ||

hk transliteration

[वयध] हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि यन मां तवं परिपृच्छसि एषां गुणान पृथक्त्वेन निबॊध गदतॊ मम ।। ३-२०३-३ ।।

sanskrit

'The fowler replied, "Very well, I shall explain what you have asked. I will describe their respective qualities separately—listen carefully."' ।। 3-203-3 ।।

english translation

[vayadha] hanta te kathayiSyAmi yana mAM tavaM paripRcchasi eSAM guNAna pRthaktvena nibòdha gadatò mama || 3-203-3 ||

hk transliteration

मॊहात्मकं तमस तेषां रज एषां परवर्तकम परकाशबहुलत्वाच च सत्त्वं जयाय इहॊच्यते ।। ३-२०३-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Tamas is characterized by spiritual delusion, rajas drives individuals to action, and sattva, being of noble splendor, is considered the greatest among them.' ।। 3-203-4 ।।

english translation

mòhAtmakaM tamasa teSAM raja eSAM paravartakama parakAzabahulatvAca ca sattvaM jayAya ihòcyate || 3-203-4 ||

hk transliteration

अविद्या बहुलॊ मूढः सवप्नशीलॊ विचेतनः दुर्दृशीकस तमॊ धवस्तः सक्रॊधस तामसॊ ऽलसः ।। ३-२०३-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Immersed in ignorance, the deluded one is dominated by sleep and dreams, devoid of awareness. He possesses distorted vision, enveloped in darkness, prone to anger, and steeped in lethargy—such is the nature of one afflicted by tamas (the quality of inertia or dullness).' ।। 3-203-5 ।।

avidyA bahulò mUDhaH savapnazIlò vicetanaH durdRzIkasa tamò dhavastaH sakròdhasa tAmasò 'lasaH || 3-203-5 ||
