रथः शरीरं पुरुषस्य दृष्टम; आत्मा नियतेन्द्रियाण्य आहुर अश्वान तैर अप्रमत्तः कुशली सदश्वैर; दान्तैः सुखं याति रथीव धीरः ।। ३-२०२-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'The body is seen as the chariot of a person; the soul is the charioteer, and the senses are the horses. A wise charioteer, who is vigilant and skillful, controls the horses with discipline and, with a calm mind, reaches the goal of happiness, just like a charioteer who rides with well-trained horses.' ।। 3-202-21 ।।

english translation

rathaH zarIraM puruSasya dRSTama; AtmA niyatendriyANya Ahura azvAna taira apramattaH kuzalI sadazvaira; dAntaiH sukhaM yAti rathIva dhIraH || 3-202-21 ||

hk transliteration

षण्णाम आत्मनि नित्यानाम इन्द्रियाणां परमाथिनाम यॊ धीरॊ धारयेद रश्मीन स सयात परमसारथिः ।। ३-२०२-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'When any of these senses overwhelms a person's mind, he loses his reason and becomes like a ship tossed by storms on the open sea.' ।। 3-202-22 ।।

english translation

SaNNAma Atmani nityAnAma indriyANAM paramAthinAma yò dhIrò dhArayeda razmIna sa sayAta paramasArathiH || 3-202-22 ||

hk transliteration

इन्द्रियाणां परसृष्टानां हयानाम इव वर्त्मसु धृतिं कुर्वीत सारथ्ये धृत्या तानि जयेद धरुवम ।। ३-२०२-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'When the senses, like horses released on their paths, stray, one must exercise steadfast restraint as a charioteer. With firm determination, one can surely conquer them.' ।। 3-202-23 ।।

english translation

indriyANAM parasRSTAnAM hayAnAma iva vartmasu dhRtiM kurvIta sArathye dhRtyA tAni jayeda dharuvama || 3-202-23 ||

hk transliteration

इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन मनॊ ऽनुविधीयते तद अस्य हरते बुद्धिं नावं वायुर इवाम्भसि ।। ३-२०२-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'When the mind follows the roaming senses, it takes away one's intelligence, just as the wind sweeps a boat off course on the waters.' ।। 3-202-24 ।।

english translation

indriyANAM hi caratAM yana manò 'nuvidhIyate tada asya harate buddhiM nAvaM vAyura ivAmbhasi || 3-202-24 ||

hk transliteration

येषु विप्रतिपद्यन्ते षट्सु मॊहात फलागमे तेष्व अध्यवसिताध्यायी विन्दते धयानजं फलम ।। ३-२०२-२५ ।।

sanskrit

'Men are deceived by illusion, hoping to gain the fruits of these six desires, whose effects are understood by those with spiritual insight, who, in turn, reap the rewards of their clear perception.' ।। 3-202-25 ।।

english translation

yeSu vipratipadyante SaTsu mòhAta phalAgame teSva adhyavasitAdhyAyI vindate dhayAnajaM phalama || 3-202-25 ||
