[मार्क] स तु विप्रॊ महाप्राज्ञॊ धर्मव्याधम अपृच्छत शिष्टाचारं कथम अहं विद्याम इति नरॊत्तम एतन महामते वयाध परब्रवीहि यथातथम ।। ३-१९८-५६ ।।

'Markandeya continued, 'Upon hearing these words from the fowler, the wise Brahmana, endowed with great knowledge, asked him, "How can I discern virtuous conduct? Blessed are you, O foremost of virtuous men, and I wish to hear the truth of this from you. Therefore, O exalted soul, kindly tell me all about it."' ।। 3-198-56 ।।

'Hearing these words, the fowler replied, "O best of Brahmanas, the five sacred principles—sacrifice, charity, asceticism, the Vedas, and truth—are always present in conduct that is called virtuous."' ।। 3-198-57 ।।

'Having subdued desire, anger, pride, greed, and deceit, those who delight in virtue for its own sake are truly virtuous and earn the approval of the righteous.' ।। 3-198-58 ।।

'These individuals, devoted to sacrifices and the study of the Vedas, adhere strictly to the ways of the good and the honest, never straying from the path of righteousness. This, indeed, is the second defining quality of the virtuous.' ।। 3-198-59 ।।
