[वै] तं विवक्षन्तम आलक्ष्य कुरुराजॊ महामुनिम कथा संजननार्थाय चॊदयाम आस पाण्डवः ॥ ३-१८१-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, "The son of Pandu, the king of the Kuru dynasty, seeing that the great sage was ready to speak, questioned him with the intent of prompting him to address certain topics."' ॥ 3-181-1 ॥
english translation
भवान दैवतदैत्यानाम ऋषीणां च महात्मनाम राजर्षीणां च सर्वेषां चरितज्ञः सनातनः ॥ ३-१८१-२ ॥
'You, who are ancient and eternal, know the deeds of the gods, demons, illustrious saints, and all the royal sages.' ॥ 3-181-2 ॥
english translation
सेव्यश चॊपासितव्यश च मतॊ नः काङ्क्षितश चिरम अयं च देवकीपुत्रः पराप्तॊ ऽसमान अवलॊककः ॥ ३-१८१-३ ॥
'We regard you as worthy of worship and reverence; we have long desired your presence. And now, this son of Devaki, Krishna, has arrived to grace us with his visit.' ॥ 3-181-3 ॥
english translation
भवत्य एव हि मे बुद्धिर दृष्ट्वात्मानं सुखाच चयुतम धार्तराष्ट्रांश च दुर्वृत्तन्न ऋध्यतः परेक्ष्य सर्वशः ॥ ३-१८१-४ ॥
'Indeed, when I look at myself, deprived of happiness, and contemplate the sons of Dhritarashtra, leading lives of evil yet prospering in every way, I am led to believe that it is man who performs all actions, whether good or bad, and it is he who reaps the fruits of those actions.' ॥ 3-181-4 ॥
english translation
कर्मणः पुरुषः कर्ता शुभस्याप्य अशुभस्य च सवफलं तद उपाश्नाति कथं कर्ता सविद ईश्वरः ॥ ३-१८१-५ ॥
'A person is the doer of actions, both good and bad, And they themselves experience the fruits of those actions, How then can God be considered the doer?' ॥ 3-181-5 ॥
