अथ वा सुखदुःखेषु नृणां बरह्मविदां वर इह वा कृतम अन्वेति परदेहाथ वा पुनः ॥ ३-१८१-६ ॥
'And, O best of the learned in divine knowledge, how do the actions of men follow them? Is it in this world, or in some subsequent existence?' ॥ 3-181-6 ॥
english translation
देही च देहं संत्यज्य मृग्यमाणः शुभाशुभैः कथं संयुज्यते परेत्य इह वा दविजसत्तम ॥ ३-१८१-७ ॥
'And, O foremost of the righteous among the twice-born, how is it that an embodied soul is bound by its good and evil deeds that pursue it? Is it after death, or does it happen in this world?' ॥ 3-181-7 ॥
english translation
ऐह लौकिकम एवैतद उताहॊ पारलौकिकम कव च कर्माणि तिष्ठन्ति जन्तॊःप्रेतस्य भार्गव ॥ ३-१८१-८ ॥
'Is this a worldly matter, or is it a spiritual one? Where do the actions of a departed being, O Bharadvaja, remain?' ॥ 3-181-8 ॥
english translation
[मार्क] तवद युक्तॊ ऽयम अनुप्रश्नॊ यथावद वदतां वर विदितं वेदितव्यं ते सथित्य अर्थम अनुपृच्छसि ॥ ३-१८१-९ ॥
'Markandeya said, "O best of speakers, this question is fitting for you and is exactly as it should be. You know all that is to be known, yet you ask this question merely for the sake of form."' ॥ 3-181-9 ॥

अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि तद इहैकमनः शृणु यथेहामुत्र च नरः सुखदुःखम उपाश्नुते ॥ ३-१८१-१० ॥
'Here I shall answer you: listen with an attentive mind, as I explain how a man experiences both happiness and misery, in this world and in the next.' ॥ 3-181-10 ॥
