[य] जातिर अत्र महासर्पमनुष्यत्वे महामते संकरात सर्ववर्णानां दुष्परीक्ष्येति मे मतिः ।। ३-१७७-२६ ।।

sanskrit

'Yudhishthira said, "In human society, O mighty and wise serpent, it is difficult to ascertain one's caste due to the mingling of the four orders. This is my opinion."' ।। 3-177-26 ।।

english translation

[ya] jAtira atra mahAsarpamanuSyatve mahAmate saMkarAta sarvavarNAnAM duSparIkSyeti me matiH || 3-177-26 ||

'Men of all orders, through promiscuous unions, beget offspring upon women of all orders. And for all men, speech, sexual intercourse, birth, and death are common.' ।। 3-177-27 ।।

sarve sarvAsva apatyAni janayanti yadA narAH vAna maithunama athò janma maraNaM ca samaM nRNAma || 3-177-27 ||

'This is the authority of the sages and [the statement] 'we worship' as well. Therefore, those who are seers of truth know that moral conduct is considered supreme/foremost.' ।। 3-177-28 ।।

'The natal ceremony of a person is performed before the cutting of the umbilical cord. At that time, his mother acts as Savitri, and his father officiates as the priest.' ।। 3-177-29 ।।

parAnnna nAbhira vardhanAta puMsò jAtakarma vidhIyate tatrAsya mAtA sAvitrI pitA tava AcArya ucyate || 3-177-29 ||

वृत्त्या शूद्र समॊ हय एष यावद वेदे न जायते अस्मिन्न एवं मतिद्वैधे मनुः सवायम्भुवॊ ऽबरवीत ।। ३-१७७-३० ।।

'He is considered a Sudra as long as he is not initiated into the Vedas. Doubts having arisen on this matter, O prince of serpents, Swayambhuva Manu declared that the mixed castes are to be regarded as superior to the other classes.' ।। 3-177-30 ।।

vRttyA zUdra samò haya eSa yAvada vede na jAyate asminna evaM matidvaidhe manuH savAyambhuvò 'baravIta || 3-177-30 ||
