यथा तव इदं मया पराप्तं भुजंगत्वम अरिंदम तद अवश्यं मया खयाप्यं तवाद्य शृणु सत्तम ॥ ३-१७६-११ ॥

'O best of men, listen now as I recount how I came to possess this serpentine form, for it is a tale that must certainly be told to you.' ॥ 3-176-11 ॥

yathA tava idaM mayA parAptaM bhujaMgatvama ariMdama tada avazyaM mayA khayApyaM tavAdya zRNu sattama ॥ 3-176-11 ॥

इमाम अवस्थां संप्राप्तॊ हय अहं कॊपान मनीषिणाम शापस्यान्तं परिप्रेप्सुः सर्पस्य कथयामि तत ॥ ३-१७६-१२ ॥

'Hear, O best of the pious, I have fallen into this plight due to the wrath of the Maharshis. Now, desiring to rid myself of the curse, I shall narrate the entire tale to you.' ॥ 3-176-12 ॥

imAma avasthAM saMprAptò haya ahaM kòpAna manISiNAma zApasyAntaM pariprepsuH sarpasya kathayAmi tata ॥ 3-176-12 ॥

नहुषॊ नाम राजर्षिर वयक्तं ते शरॊत्रम आगतः तवैव पूर्वः पूर्वेषाम आयॊर वंशकरः सुतः ॥ ३-१७६-१३ ॥

'Surely, you have heard of the royal sage Nahusha. He was the son of Ayu and the perpetuator of the lineage of your ancestors.' ॥ 3-176-13 ॥

nahuSò nAma rAjarSira vayaktaM te zaròtrama AgataH tavaiva pUrvaH pUrveSAma Ayòra vaMzakaraH sutaH ॥ 3-176-13 ॥

सॊ ऽहं शापाद अगस्त्यस्य बराह्मणान अवमन्य च इमाम अवस्थाम आपन्नः पश्य दैवम इदं मम ॥ ३-१७६-१४ ॥

'I am indeed the one. For having affronted the Brahmanas, I have come to this condition through Agastya's curse.' ॥ 3-176-14 ॥

sò 'haM zApAda agastyasya barAhmaNAna avamanya ca imAma avasthAma ApannaH pazya daivama idaM mama ॥ 3-176-14 ॥

तवां चेद अवध्यम आयान्तम अतीव परियदर्शनम अहम अद्यॊपयॊक्ष्यामि विधानं पश्य यादृशम ॥ ३-१७६-१५ ॥

'You are my kin, and a sight most pleasing to behold—thus, you should not be slain by me. Yet, today, I must devour you! Behold the dispensation of Destiny!' ॥ 3-176-15 ॥
