शरूयतां चाभिधास्यामॊ गुणदॊषान नरर्षभाः शुभाशुभाधिवासेन संसर्गं कुरुते यथा ॥ ३-१-२१ ॥
'O bulls among men, listen as we discuss the merits and demerits arising from association with what is good and bad!' ॥ 3-1-21 ॥
english translation
zarUyatAM cAbhidhAsyAmò guNadòSAna nararSabhAH zubhAzubhAdhivAsena saMsargaM kurute yathA ॥ 3-1-21 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवस्त्रम आपस तिलान भूमिं गन्धॊ वासयते यथा पुष्पाणाम अधिवासेन तथा संसर्गजा गुणाः ॥ ३-१-२२ ॥
'Just as cloth, water, the ground, and sesame seeds become scented by association with flowers, so too are qualities shaped by one's associations.' ॥ 3-1-22 ॥
english translation
vastrama Apasa tilAna bhUmiM gandhò vAsayate yathA puSpANAma adhivAsena tathA saMsargajA guNAH ॥ 3-1-22 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमॊहजालस्य यॊनिर हि मूढैर एव समागमः अहन्य अहनि धर्मस्य यॊनिः साधु समागमः ॥ ३-१-२३ ॥
'Truly, mingling with fools creates an illusion that ensnares the mind, while frequenting the wise and virtuous leads one to practice virtue.' ॥ 3-1-23 ॥
english translation
mòhajAlasya yònira hi mUDhaira eva samAgamaH ahanya ahani dharmasya yòniH sAdhu samAgamaH ॥ 3-1-23 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्मात पराज्ञैश च वृद्धैश च सुस्वभावैस तपस्विभिः सद्भिश च सह संसर्गः कार्यः शम परायणैः ॥ ३-१-२४ ॥
'Therefore, those who seek liberation should associate with the wise, the elderly, the honest, and the pure in conduct—those endowed with ascetic merit.' ॥ 3-1-24 ॥

tasmAta parAjJaiza ca vRddhaiza ca susvabhAvaisa tapasvibhiH sadbhiza ca saha saMsargaH kAryaH zama parAyaNaiH ॥ 3-1-24 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयेषां तरीण्य अवदातानि यॊनिर विध्या च कर्म च तान सेवेत तैः समास्या हि शास्त्रेभ्यॊ ऽपि गरीयसी ॥ ३-१-२५ ॥
'Such association, characterized by purity in knowledge (of the Vedas), lineage, and actions, is even more valuable than the study of scriptures.' ॥ 3-1-25 ॥

yeSAM tarINya avadAtAni yònira vidhyA ca karma ca tAna seveta taiH samAsyA hi zAstrebhyò 'pi garIyasI ॥ 3-1-25 ॥
