निरारम्भा हय अपि वयं पुण्यशीलेषु साधुषु पुण्यम एवाप्नुयामेह पापं पापॊपसेवनात ।। ३-१-२६ ।।

sanskrit

'Though we are devoid of religious practices, we will still gain merit by associating with the righteous, just as we would incur sin by associating with the sinful.' ।। 3-1-26 ।।

english translation

nirArambhA haya api vayaM puNyazIleSu sAdhuSu puNyama evApnuyAmeha pApaM pApòpasevanAta || 3-1-26 ||

'The very sight, touch, and conversation with the dishonest lead to a loss of virtue, and those who are subjected to such influences never achieve purity of mind.' ।। 3-1-27 ।।

asatAM darzanAta saparzAta saMjalpana sahAsanata dharmAcAraH parahIyante na ca sidhyanti mAnavAH || 3-1-27 ||

'A person's intelligence diminishes in the company of the lowly, It becomes mediocre in the company of the average, And it attains excellence in the company of the superior.' ।। 3-1-28 ।।

buddhiza ca hIyate puMsAM nIcaiH saha samAgamAta madhyamaira madhyatAM yAti zareSThatAM yAti còttamaiH || 3-1-28 ||

'All the attributes praised in the world as sources of religious merit, worldly prosperity, and sensual pleasure—those extolled in the Vedas and approved by the virtuous.' ।। 3-1-29 ।।

ye guNAH kIrtitA lòke dharmakAmArtha saMbhavAH lòkAcArAtma saMbhUtA vedòktAH ziSTasaMmatAH || 3-1-29 ||

'All those excellent qualities are present in you collectively and individually, We, who desire what is best, wish to dwell among the virtuous.' ।। 3-1-30 ।।
