[ज] एवं दयूतजिताः पार्थाः कॊपिताश च दुरात्मभिः धार्तराष्ट्रैः सहामात्यैर निकृत्या दविजसत्तम ॥ ३-१-१ ॥
'Janamejaya said, "O foremost among the regenerate ones, having been deceitfully defeated at dice by the sons of Dhritarashtra and their counselors, the sons of Pritha were filled with wrath at those wicked men who incited such fierce animosity."' ॥ 3-1-1 ॥

[ja] evaM dayUtajitAH pArthAH kòpitAza ca durAtmabhiH dhArtarASTraiH sahAmAtyaira nikRtyA davijasattama ॥ 3-1-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशराविताः परुषा वाचः सृजद्भिर वैरम उत्तमम किम अकुर्वन्त कौरव्या मम पूर्वपितामहाः ॥ ३-१-२ ॥
'Spoken to with such cruel words, what did my ancestors, the Kuru princes, do next?' ॥ 3-1-2 ॥

zarAvitAH paruSA vAcaH sRjadbhira vairama uttamama kima akurvanta kauravyA mama pUrvapitAmahAH ॥ 3-1-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथं चैश्वर्यविभ्रष्टाः सहसा दुःखम एयुषः वने विजह्रिरे पार्थाः शक्र परतिमतेजसः ॥ ३-१-३ ॥
'How did the sons of Pritha, equal in prowess to Indra himself, endure their days in the forest, stripped of their wealth and suddenly plunged into deep despair?' ॥ 3-1-3 ॥

kathaM caizvaryavibhraSTAH sahasA duHkhama eyuSaH vane vijahrire pArthAH zakra paratimatejasaH ॥ 3-1-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptके चैनान अन्ववर्तन्त पराप्तान वयसनम उत्तमम किमाहाराः किमाचाराः कव च वासॊ महात्मनाम ॥ ३-१-४ ॥
'And who accompanied these princes, weighed down by such great affliction? And how did those high-souled ones conduct themselves? How did they sustain themselves, and where did they find shelter?' ॥ 3-1-4 ॥

ke cainAna anvavartanta parAptAna vayasanama uttamama kimAhArAH kimAcArAH kava ca vAsò mahAtmanAma ॥ 3-1-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथं दवादश वर्षाणि वने तेषां महात्मनाम वयतीयुर बराह्मणश्रेष्ठ शूराणाम अरिघातिनाम ॥ ३-१-५ ॥
'O illustrious ascetic and foremost of Brahmanas, how did the twelve years of exile pass for those warriors who were slayers of foes?' ॥ 3-1-5 ॥

kathaM davAdaza varSANi vane teSAM mahAtmanAma vayatIyura barAhmaNazreSTha zUrANAma arighAtinAma ॥ 3-1-5 ॥
