प्रत्यगूहुर्महानद्यः प्राङ्मुखाः सिन्धुसत्तमाः । विपरीता दिशः सर्वा न प्राज्ञायत किंचन॥५-८२-६॥
The great rivers flowed backward, facing east, O best of kings; all directions seemed inverted, and nothing could be clearly discerned.

प्राज्वलन्नग्नयो राजन्पृथिवी समकम्पत । उदपानाश्च कुम्भाश्च प्रासिञ्चञ्शतशो जलम्॥५-८२-७॥
Fires flared up, O king, and the earth trembled; wells and water-jars spilled water in hundreds of places.

तमःसंवृतमप्यासीत्सर्वं जगदिदं तदा । न दिशो नादिशो राजन्प्रज्ञायन्ते स्म रेणुना॥५-८२-८॥
Then this entire world was covered in darkness; neither directions nor intermediate quarters, O king, could be made out because of dust.

प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दः खे शरीरं न दृश्यते । सर्वेषु राजन्देशेषु तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्॥५-८२-९॥
A great sound arose; no form was seen in the sky. In all regions, O king, it appeared as something extraordinary.

प्रामथ्नाद्धास्तिनपुरं वातो दक्षिणपश्चिमः । आरुजन्गणशो वृक्षान्परुषो भीमनिस्वनः॥५-८२-१०॥
A harsh southwesterly wind, with a formidable sound, battered Hāstinapura, breaking trees in groups.
