The Dhārtarāṣṭras are exceedingly acquisitive; they have consolidated loyalties, long dwelt together in alliance, secured friends, and built up strength—O scorcher of foes.

english translation

There is no prospect that they will treat you as an equal, O lord of the people; for they deem themselves mighty, upheld by Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, and others.

english translation

So long as you continue to treat them with gentleness, O king, so long will they seize upon your sovereignty—O subduer of foes.

english translation

Neither out of compassion, nor because of your dejection, nor even for the sake of dharma and advantage will the Dhārtarāṣṭras grant your request, O subduer of foes.

english translation

This indeed is the reason: the Pāṇḍavas, out of regard for you, did not resent even having to wear only a loincloth—though that hardship was grievous.
