The Blessed One said: I have heard Saṃjaya’s statement, and I have also heard yours. I understand fully the intention—both theirs and yours.
english translation
Your judgment rests upon dharma, while their resolve rests upon enmity. If the aim could be gained without battle, that indeed would be what you would most approve.
english translation
And this is not held to be the settled (naiṣṭhika) duty of a kṣatriya, O lord of the people—so declare all who observe the āśramas—namely, that a kṣatriya should live by begging.
english translation
Victory or death in battle is an ancient allotment ordained by the Disposer. This is the kṣatriya’s own dharma; despondent self-abasement is not commended.
english translation
For no workable course is found by clinging to despondency, O Yudhiṣṭhira. Exert your valor, strong-armed one; strike down the enemies, subduer of foes.
