Those who are truly heroic—modest, noble, and sensitive to compassion—are precisely the ones who are cut down in the stratagems of war; the younger and less scrupulous tend to escape.

english translation

Even after striking down one’s opponents, O Janārdana, remorse persists unceasingly. Moreover, a harmful chain of consequences follows here, and a residue still remains.

english translation

For the surviving remainder, once it gains strength, leaves no remainder at all. Seeking to bring the enmity to an end, it strives for total eradication.

english translation

Victory gives rise to enmity; the defeated dwells in sorrow. But one who is pacified sleeps in ease, having set aside both victory and defeat.

english translation

A man in whom enmity has arisen sleeps ever in distress, his mind without ease—like one who dwells in the same house with a serpent.
