He is the supreme abode—everlasting, undecaying, and imperishable—likened to the puṇḍarīka, the lotus. From that association he is called Puṇḍarīkākṣa, the lotus-eyed; and because he strikes fear into the predatory dasyu, he is known as Janārdana.
english translation
Because his sattva—his essential integrity and excellence—never falls away, and because he is not diminished from sattva, he is therefore called Sātvata. And from his preeminence (ārṣabha), he is remembered as Vṛṣabhekṣaṇa, the one of steadfast, bull-like gaze.
english translation
Because he is unborn—he does not arise from a mother—he is therefore called Anīkajit, conqueror of opposing hosts. And because the devas are self-luminous, and because of his restraint (dama), the learned know him as Dāmodara.
english translation
From joy, well-being, and the sovereignty of happiness, he attains the designation Hṛṣīkeśa, Lord of the senses. Bearing, as it were, the two worlds upon his arms, he is remembered as Mahābāhu, the mighty-armed.
english translation
Because he never diminishes ‘downward’ (adhas), he is therefore called Adhokṣaja. And because he is the refuge and goal (ayana) of human beings (narāḥ), he is remembered as Nārāyaṇa. Further, because he fills and fulfills (pūraṇa) and because he is the abiding seat (sadana), he is thus Puruṣottama, the Supreme Person.
