Vaiśaṃpāyana said: As the Pārthas were being discussed at length, Karṇa—without giving thought to that son of Vicitravīrya—spoke in the Kaurava assembly, seeking to encourage Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son.

english translation

Having obtained from Rāma that weapon of Brahmā by making a false pledge earlier, I was then told by him—upon realizing it—that it will not manifest for you at the time of your final crisis.

english translation

Even though the offense was grave, I was cursed by that sage—my teacher—who was otherwise restrained; a great seer of sharp energy is capable, indeed, of reducing even the earth with its oceans to ashes.

english translation

For his mind was favorably disposed toward me through my service and my own effort; therefore that weapon-knowledge remains with me in part, and thus I am capable—this responsibility is mine.

english translation

If I obtain that sage’s favor even for a moment, then—having neutralized the Pāñcālas, the Kārūṣas, the Matsyas, and the Pārthas together with their sons and grandsons—I will attain worlds said to be won by arms.
