He—foremost among speakers—uttered words that were pleasing and well-formed, yet unsettling to the Dhārtarāṣṭras: gentle at the outset, but ultimately severe in implication.

english translation

I heard that speech of one worthy to speak—composed with disciplined syllables and instruction—desirable in its intended meaning, yet afterward drying the heart with its gravity.

english translation

Vāsudeva said: “Sañjaya, speak these words to the thoughtful Dhṛtarāṣṭra, while the foremost of the Kurus listens—and while Droṇa also listens.”

english translation

“Perform abundant sacrifices; give honoraria to the Brahmins; take joy with your sons and wives—great danger has come upon you.”

english translation

“Distribute wealth to worthy recipients; secure the sons you desire; act kindly toward those dear to you—for the king hastens toward victory.”
