Once, in the forenoon, when I had completed my sacred recitation, a brāhmaṇa spoke to me at the water’s edge in pleasing words: “Pārtha, a hard duty awaits you; Savyasācin, you must do battle with your foes.”

english translation

“Either let Indra—lord of the tawny steeds, thunderbolt in hand—go before you in battle, striking down your foes; or else, from behind, let Kṛṣṇa Vāsudeva protect you with the chariot yoked to Sugrīva, the divine steed.”

english translation

And I chose Vāsudeva as my ally in this war rather than Mahendra of the thunderbolt. I have obtained Kṛṣṇa for the suppression of aggressors; I deem this to have been ordained for me by the divine powers.

english translation

If Kṛṣṇa were to approve a man’s victory—even of one who does not fight even in thought—then that man would surely overcome all enemies, even those allied with Indra and the gods; for in Kṛṣṇa there is no uncertainty on the human plane.

english translation

Whoever would seek to defeat Vāsudeva—Kṛṣṇa, radiant and supremely valorous—by war and stratagem would be like one trying to cross the immeasurable ocean using only his arms.
