The powerless should forbear toward everyone; the powerful should forbear for the sake of dharma. For one to whom gain and loss are equal, forbearance is always beneficial.

english translation

Let one pursue that pleasure which, even when enjoyed, does not diminish dharma and artha; one should not take up a foolish vow or a rigid observance.

english translation

Prosperity does not dwell among those overwhelmed by distress, the negligent, the deniers of dharma, the indolent, the self-uncontrolled, and those devoid of initiative.

english translation

A person endowed with straightforwardness, and modest because of that very straightforwardness, is taken to be powerless; the ill-judging then harass him.

english translation

Prosperity, out of apprehension, does not approach one who is excessively noble, excessively generous, excessively valorous, excessively rigid in vows, or proud of one’s own intelligence.
