One who, after receiving a benefit, says, “I do not remember it”; one who, after giving, boasts when asked again; and one who here seeks conciliation with the unethical—these are pursued by Yama’s noose-bearing agents, as swiftly as the wind.

english translation

As a person conducts himself, so should one conduct oneself toward him—that is the practical rule of dharma. One who proceeds by deception should be met with fitting counter-measures; one of good conduct should be answered with goodness.

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “When the Vedas declare that a human being is said to live for a hundred years, why then does one fail to attain that full lifespan here? What is the cause?”

english translation

Vidura said: “Excessive speech, excessive pride, reckless renunciation, anger, excessive craving, and betrayal of friends—these are the six.”

english translation

These very sharp ‘blades’ cut short the lifespans of embodied beings. It is these that bring humans to ruin—not death itself. May well-being attend you.
