Through abuse and slander, the unwise wound the wise. The one who speaks thus incurs demerit; the one who endures with forgiveness is released from it.

english translation

Coercive harm is the ‘strength’ of the unethical; for kings, strength lies in the rightful administration of punishment. Attentive service is the strength of women; forgiveness is the strength of the virtuous.

english translation

O king, restraint of speech is deemed the most difficult. One cannot speak at length while keeping one’s words both meaningful and well-formed.

english translation

Well-spoken words, in their many forms, bring welfare. The very same speech, when ill-spoken, becomes a cause of harm, O king.

english translation

A forest pierced by arrows or cut by an axe can grow back; but the repugnant wound inflicted by ill-spoken words does not grow back.
