Character is primary in a person. If it is destroyed here, then life is of no use to him—nor wealth, nor relatives.

english translation

For the wealthy, food tends to be centered on meat; for those of moderate means, it is richer in dairy. For the poor, food is predominantly salted—O bull among the Bharatas.

english translation

The poor often eat food that is, in truth, more satisfying; hunger sharpens the sense of taste, and such a condition is exceedingly rare among the wealthy.

english translation

Generally, among the affluent there is no capacity to truly enjoy; but among the poor, O best of kings, even mere wood—the simplest fare—is digested and made serviceable.

english translation

For those at the lowest station, the fear is lack of livelihood; for those in the middle, fear arises from death; but for those regarded as eminent, the greatest fear is humiliation.
