In what is pleasant and unpleasant, in comfort and distress, and in blame and praise, O King, one should adhere to this principle. Others censure a person when there is wrongdoing, and they praise that same person when conduct is virtuous.

english translation

Therefore I censure you: from strife among the Bhāratas, the people’s end will surely arise. If not, then through the fault of your wrongful deed it will consume the Kurus—like a line of fire advancing along a darkened path through dry brush.

english translation

You alone among your sons, O King, can bring the whole world under your sway, O lord of men. Yet at the time of gambling you praise those driven by desire; behold its consequence—there is no remedy other than forbearance and self-restraint.

english translation

By raising up the unfit, O ruler, and restraining the capable, O King, you are, through weakness, unable to protect this vast and flourishing realm, O Kaurava.

english translation

Having been granted leave, shaken by the chariot’s speed and worn with fatigue, I lie down to rest, O lion among men. In the morning the Kurus will assemble in the hall as listeners to the words of Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira).
