A Brahmin should study; perform yajñas (sacrifices); give in charity; and go to the foremost pilgrimage‑sites. He should teach, officiate sacrifices for those entitled, and accept gifts known to be proper.

english translation

Likewise, a rājanya (Kṣatriya) should protect the people, acting in accordance with dharma and remaining vigilant; he should give in charity, perform sacrifices, study all the Vedas, establish a household, and—doing meritorious deeds—dwell as a householder.

english translation

Having studied, a Vaiśya should gather and safeguard wealth through agriculture, the protection of cattle, and trade, remaining ever vigilant; acting in ways pleasing to Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, steadfast in dharma and performing meritorious deeds, he should uphold the life of the householder.

english translation

Service and reverent attendance upon Brāhmaṇas are prescribed; he should not undertake Vedic study, and sacrifice (yajña) is restricted for him. Ever active for livelihood and welfare, and never indolent—this is remembered as the ancient dharma of the Śūdra.

english translation

Protecting these norms with vigilance, the king should uphold them and set all varṇas in their own proper duties (svadharma). Free from self-serving desire and even-handed toward the subjects, he should not yield to unlawful, dharma-opposed demands.
