Then Rāma, foremost of the Bhṛgus, went to Mahendra together with those sages, and returned as he had come, after taking leave of me, O Bhārata.

english translation

Then I mounted my chariot, praised by the twice-born. Entering the city, I reported to my mother Satyavatī what had occurred, O great king; and she, in turn, expressed approval to me.

english translation

I appointed prudent men to observe the maiden’s condition and conduct. Day after day they reported to me what she had said and what deeds she had undertaken, remaining diligently engaged for what they deemed my welfare and interest.

Indeed, when that maiden—resolved upon austerity—departed for the forest, at that very moment I became distressed and dejected, as though bereft of composure.

english translation

For no kṣatriya would defeat me in battle by mere martial prowess—except one who knows brahman, disciplined by tapas and steadfast in rigorous vows, my dear.
