कौरवाणां कुले जातः पाण्डोः पुत्रो विशेषतः । द्रोणं व्यपदिशञ्शिष्यो वासुदेवसहायवान्॥५-१५५-३१॥
He is born in the Kaurava line—above all as Pāṇḍu’s son—acknowledged as Droṇa’s disciple, and with Vāsudeva as his ally.

कथमस्मद्विधो ब्रूयाद्भीतोऽस्मीत्ययशस्करम् । वचनं नरशार्दूल वज्रायुधमपि स्वयम्॥५-१५५-३२॥
How could one like me utter the disgrace-breeding words, “I am afraid,” O tiger among men—even if I faced Vajrāyudha (Indra) himself?
english translation
नास्मि भीतो महाबाहो सहायार्थश्च नास्ति मे । यथाकामं यथायोगं गच्छ वान्यत्र तिष्ठ वा॥५-१५५-३३॥
I am not afraid, O mighty-armed one, and I have no need of an ally. As you wish, as you deem fit—go elsewhere, or stay, as you choose.

विनिवर्त्य ततो रुक्मी सेनां सागरसंनिभाम् । दुर्योधनमुपागच्छत्तथैव भरतर्षभ॥५-१५५-३४॥
Then Rukmī, having turned back his army—vast as the ocean—approached Duryodhana in the same manner, O bull among the Bhāratas.

तथैव चाभिगम्यैनमुवाच स नराधिपः । प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनापि स तदा शूरमानिना॥५-१५५-३५॥
Approaching him likewise, that ruler spoke; yet he too was rejected then by the one who deemed himself a hero.
