सर्वं भवतु ते राज्यं पञ्च ग्रामान्विसर्जय । अवश्यं भरणीया हि पितुस्ते राजसत्तम॥५-१४८-१६॥
“Let the entire kingdom be yours; relinquish only five villages. For you must, of necessity, provide for your father, O best of kings.”
english translation
एवमुक्तस्तु दुष्टात्मा नैव भावं व्यमुञ्चत । दण्डं चतुर्थं पश्यामि तेषु पापेषु नान्यथा॥५-१४८-१७॥
Though addressed in this manner, the ill-intentioned man did not relinquish his disposition. For those wrongdoers I foresee a fourth measure—punitive sanction—and not otherwise.

निर्याताश्च विनाशाय कुरुक्षेत्रं नराधिपाः । एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं यद्वृत्तं कुरुसंसदि॥५-१४८-१८॥
The rulers have set out for Kurukṣetra, moving toward destruction. All this has been told to you—what transpired in the Kuru assembly.

न ते राज्यं प्रयच्छन्ति विना युद्धेन पाण्डव । विनाशहेतवः सर्वे प्रत्युपस्थितमृत्यवः॥५-१४८-१९॥
They will not grant you the kingdom without battle, O Pāṇḍava. All of them are causes of ruin, and death now stands close at hand.
